Kundli matching in Mumbai usually happens under pressure. The families have met, the photos have been shared on WhatsApp, someone's aunt has already run the details through an app, and now a score of 17 or 22 is sitting in the family group with nobody sure what it means. I get these calls often, and the first thing I tell people is simple: the number is the beginning of the reading, not the verdict.
I'm Phoolchand Joshi, a Vedic astrologer working online for families across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai for more than 15 years. This page explains how kundli matching, also called kundli milan, horoscope matching or match making, actually works, what the 36 guns measure, how I look at Manglik dosh, and what you should expect from a proper matching before you fix a rishta.
In short
- Gun Milan scores two charts out of 36 on eight points. 18 or more is the usual threshold.
- The score alone is not enough. I also check Manglik status on both sides, Nadi and Bhakoot dosh, and the 7th house in each chart.
- What you need: date, exact time and place of birth for both people.
- Cost: the first conversation is free. No fee for the reading itself; a puja, if you choose one, is ₹501.
What kundli matching is
Kundli matching is the comparison of two birth charts before marriage. In North and West India, including most Mumbai families, the standard method is Ashtakoota Gun Milan. It compares the Moon's position in both charts, specifically the nakshatra and rashi, across eight areas called kootas. Each koota carries a fixed number of points, and together they add up to 36.
Apps and websites do this calculation in seconds, and the arithmetic is the same everywhere. What an app cannot do is read the rest of the two charts, notice which doshas are cancelled, or tell you which low score is serious and which one is not. That is the part that needs an astrologer.
The 36 gunas, explained simply
| Koota | Points | What it compares |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Temperament and outlook on work and duty |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and who influences whom |
| Tara | 3 | Health and well-being, based on birth stars |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical and instinctive compatibility |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Friendship between the Moon sign lords, mental wavelength |
| Gana | 6 | Basic nature: deva, manushya or rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Family welfare, finances, and emotional closeness |
| Nadi | 8 | Health and children; the most weighted koota |
| Total | 36 |
How many gunas should match?
The traditional guideline is:
- Below 18: generally not recommended without a deeper look at both charts.
- 18 to 24: acceptable, and quite common.
- 25 to 32: good compatibility on the Moon level.
- Above 32: very good, though rare.
In practice I have seen couples with 28 points fight constantly and couples with 16 points do well for decades. That's not because Gun Milan is wrong. It's because Gun Milan only looks at the Moon. Your lagna, your 7th house, Venus, Jupiter and the dashas you will both run after marriage are not part of that score at all.

The kootas, in a little more detail
Gana: nature
Gana divides the 27 nakshatras into three groups: deva (gentle, idealistic), manushya (practical, worldly) and rakshasa (intense, independent). Deva with deva or manushya with manushya scores full points. Deva with rakshasa scores the lowest. A rakshasa gana is not a bad person. It describes a strong, self-willed temperament. The question is whether two temperaments can live together comfortably.
Yoni: instinct and physical compatibility
Each nakshatra is linked with an animal symbol, and Yoni compares the two. Some pairs are natural friends and some are traditional enemies. A low Yoni score usually points to differences in physical needs and instincts, and is worth a calm, private conversation between the couple.
Graha Maitri: the mental wavelength
Graha Maitri compares the lords of the two Moon signs. If the lords are friends, the two people tend to think alike and agree easily. If they are enemies, small decisions can turn into arguments. I give this koota a lot of weight because daily life in a Mumbai flat is full of small decisions.
Tara: well-being
Tara counts the distance between the two birth nakshatras. Certain counts are considered unfavourable for health and well-being. A low Tara score on its own is rarely a deal-breaker.
Varna and Vashya
Varna (1 point) compares temperament and outlook on duty and work. Vashya (2 points) shows mutual attraction and influence, who tends to lead and who follows. Together they're only 3 points, so they rarely decide a match by themselves.
Manglik dosh in kundli matching
Manglik dosh, also called Mangal dosh or Kuja dosh, is the part of matching that causes the most fear in Mumbai families. Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house (some traditions also include the 2nd) makes a chart Manglik.
Here is what I tell every family:
- Being Manglik is common. A large share of charts have Mars in one of these houses.
- Many Manglik doshas are cancelled. The strength of Mars, its sign, aspects from Jupiter, and the position from the Moon and Venus all change the picture.
- Two Manglik charts often match well. The classical rule is that a Manglik person marrying a Manglik person balances the dosh.
- Manglik does not mean no marriage. I have heard from families who were told a girl or boy could never marry because of Mars. That is not true, and it causes real damage.
When I check Manglik status, I check it on both sides and I tell you how strong it actually is, not just whether the app says "Manglik: Yes".
Nadi dosh and Bhakoot dosh
These two carry the heaviest weights in Gun Milan, so a zero in either one drops the score sharply.
Nadi dosh
Nadi dosh occurs when both people have the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya). Traditionally it is linked with health and progeny. But there are well-known exceptions, for example when the two people share the same rashi but different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra in different rashis. I check whether those exceptions apply before anyone panics.
Bhakoot dosh
Bhakoot looks at the distance between the two Moon signs. Certain combinations, such as 6/8, 9/5 and 2/12, are considered difficult. Bhakoot dosh is also cancelled in several situations, for example when the lords of both Moon signs are friends or the same planet.
What I check beyond the score
A proper kundli matching for marriage, the way I do it, covers:
- Gun Milan with every koota explained, not just the total.
- Manglik status on both sides and whether it is cancelled.
- Nadi and Bhakoot exceptions.
- The 7th house and its lord in both charts, for the nature of the partnership.
- Venus and Jupiter, which speak about marriage and the spouse.
- The dashas both people will run in the first years after marriage.
- Any serious afflictions that need honest discussion.
Then I give you a plain answer: this match looks good, this match is fine with a few things to be aware of, or this match has real difficulties and here is why. I don't hide behind Sanskrit words.
A simple example
Here is an illustration, not a real couple. Suppose an app shows a fairly high score for a rishta, with different Nadis and no Manglik dosh on either side. On paper that looks like a strong match.
But suppose the boy's chart also has Saturn in the 7th house and a weak Venus, while the girl will start a Rahu period in the second year after marriage. That doesn't mean "don't marry". It means the couple should expect a slower, more serious start, and should be careful about big financial decisions in that second year. This is the kind of detail a full reading adds that a score never shows.
Kundli matching for love marriages
More and more Mumbai couples meet at college, at work in BKC or Lower Parel, or through friends, and come to kundli matching after they've already decided. Often it's the parents who want the check.
In these cases I'm careful. If the chart comparison shows difficulties, I say so, but I also tell you what can be managed and how. Two adults who know each other well have information that no chart has. I won't use a score to scare anyone into breaking a relationship, and I won't pretend a difficult combination is perfect to please anyone either. If the love marriage needs family acceptance, my page on love and relationship astrology in Mumbai covers that.

When the match is low: what are the options?
A low score is not automatically a no. When a match comes out below 18, I look at:
- whether the low score comes from kootas that are cancelled by other factors,
- whether the 7th house and Venus support the marriage in both charts,
- whether the doshas involved are mild or strong.
Sometimes the honest answer is that the match is workable with awareness. Sometimes it is that the families should think carefully. In some cases a remedy such as a mantra or a puja is suggested. That is always optional. Most remedies I give are free and can be done at home.
How kundli matching works online with me
- Send both birth details on WhatsApp. Date, time and place of birth for the girl and the boy. Time from a birth certificate or hospital record is best.
- Tell me the situation. Arranged rishta, love marriage, or a second opinion after another astrologer's report.
- I prepare both charts and the matching. This usually happens the same day.
- We talk on a call. I go through every koota, the Manglik check and the full charts, in Hindi, Gujarati or English.
- You get a clear summary you can share with the family.
Please share the other person's details only if they or their family have agreed. Birth details are personal information.
What if the birth time is not known?
This happens often with older family records. A wrong time can change the lagna and the houses, but the Moon sign and nakshatra, which drive Gun Milan, often stay the same across a few hours. I will tell you clearly which parts of the matching are reliable and which are less certain.
Kundli matching for NRI families and second marriages
Many Mumbai families have one side living abroad, in the US, the UK, the Gulf or Australia. The birth place for a chart is where the person was born, not where they live now. Calls can be fixed at a time that suits both time zones. I'm available 24x7, so that's rarely a problem.
For second marriages, I read both charts with the same care, and also look at the factors that show a second partnership. These conversations stay private.
Questions to ask before trusting any match report
Whether you come to me or anyone else, ask these questions:
- Has the full chart been read, or only the Gun Milan score?
- Has Manglik status been checked on both sides, including cancellation?
- Have the exceptions for Nadi and Bhakoot dosh been checked?
- Has the 7th house been read in both charts?
- Is a costly puja being pushed as the only way forward?
If the answer to the last one is yes, get a second opinion.
Why families in Mumbai prefer an online kundli matching
A rishta in Mumbai often involves relatives in Gujarat, Rajasthan, UP or abroad. Online matching lets everyone join the same call from wherever they are. You don't need to travel to Dadar or Ghatkopar to sit in someone's office, and you can call late at night after work. I am available 24x7.
Frequently asked questions
How many gunas should match for marriage?
18 out of 36 is the usual minimum. But the full charts matter too. A good score with a weak 7th house can still be difficult, and a lower score can work well when other factors support it.
Is kundli milan the same as horoscope matching?
Yes. Kundli milan, kundli matching, horoscope matching, match making and Gun Milan are different names for comparing two birth charts before marriage.
Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?
It depends on how strong the Manglik dosh is and whether it is cancelled. In many charts it is mild. I check both charts before giving an answer.
Is Nadi dosh always serious?
No. There are recognised exceptions, such as the same rashi with different nakshatras. I check those before any conclusion.
Are online kundli matching apps accurate?
The calculation is usually accurate. What apps miss is interpretation: cancellations, the 7th house, and the dashas after marriage.
How much does kundli matching cost?
The first conversation is free and there is no consultation fee. If a puja is suggested, it costs ₹501, and it is always your choice.
Can kundli matching guarantee a happy marriage?
No. It can show strengths and areas to be careful about. A marriage depends on the two people and their families.
